Abstract: With the increasing number of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and river flooding, damage estimation and tsunami countermeasures are being actively conducted. One of such damages is the run-up of tsunamis and other river floods, which can be regarded as a hydraulic bore phenomenon. Because of the damage caused by external flooding and sluice gate collapses in noncoastal areas, it is necessary to understand the behavior of hydraulic bore phenomena. In this study, hydraulic bores were generated in an open channel by a gate, and the effects of piers and sluice gates installed upstream of the gate on the hydraulic bores were examined. The experimental results showed that the wave heights of the hydraulic bores in the case where piers and sluice gates were installed were larger than those in the case where none were installed. In addition, the flow conditions of hydraulic bore when piers and sluice gates are installed are clarified. In the case with piers, it is important to understand the effect of the planform of the piers on wave heights because the piers disturb the hydraulic bores. When the sluice gate was installed, it was confirmed that new waves were generated upstream of the sluice gate at the same time as the hydraulic bore s impacted the sluice gate.
