Abstract: Given the importance of estuarine regions to economical, recreational and aesthetic value coexisting with a wide biodiversity, it is important to characterize and map flow conditions in these regions. Estuarine regions are subject to tidal variations, that is combined with different discharge rates from rivers. These variations in the flow could affect the dispersion, transport and fate of pollutants, plastics and sediments. The present work presents a physical and a numerical model constructed in OpenFOAM® using interFoam solver to identify these flow variations in natural cavities located in the estuarine region of Mondego River. Through comparing the obtained results, it was possible to show that the proposed numerical model could be applied to map these variations.
