Abstract: Water sustainability is a growing concern as global freshwater resources face increasing pressures from climate change, population growth, and industrial demand. The industrial sector is one of the largest consumers of freshwater, and as such, has a critical role to play in reducing its water footprint. In previous generations, the focus on water footprint reduction has led to significant progress, but much of the "low-hanging fruit" has already been explored. Today, new advances in water footprint reduction are centered around technology that enables more efficient water management, leak detection, and water reuse in industrial operations. PepsiCo, as part of its pep+ environmental sustainability strategy, set ambitious goals to reduce water usage across its operations. By leveraging technology, the company has achieved a 25% reduction in water consumption, two years ahead of schedule. This paper presents two key technological approaches that have played a central role in this achievement: digitalization for water management and the use of advanced treatment technologies for water reuse.
