Keywords: Round head Breakwater REEF3D Wave current interaction

Abstract: This study presents a three-dimensional numerical investigation of wave-current interaction over breakwater roundheads using the open-source CFD model REEF3D. The model solves the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with the finite difference method and simulates the free surface using the level set method for a two-phase flow approximation. The model’s accuracy is first validated with existing literature before being applied to study the 3D velocity field, vorticity evolution, wave dynamics, and pressure distribution around both emerged and submerged breakwater roundheads. The analysis reveals maximum run-up heights and enhanced run-up under specific wave conditions. The study also explores the wave patterns on the lee side of the roundhead, demonstrating the complex hydrodynamic interactions in this coastal environment.
