Keywords: Pier Scour Pressure Flow Overtopping Flow Scoping Study
Abstract: As climate change leads to increase in frequency and intensity of floods, flood damages such failure of hydraulic infrastructures are becoming more frequent. In such situations, bridges are likely to impede the flow of water within a river, and bridge scour is one of the main concerns that threaten bridge’s stability. Especially under pressure flow and overtopping flow conditions, which can occur during extreme floods, the severity of scour increases more than that under free flow conditions. However, most of the existing studies on scour focus on free flow conditions, and there is a relatively scarce of research on scour under pressure and overtopping flow conditions. In addition, most of the previous studies were conducted overseas, and available research data is insufficient in South Korea. Therefore, this study aims to identify the status and major trends of research on bridge scour focused on pressure and overtopping flow, identify research gaps in the field, and provide insights that can contribute to future research trend by conducting a scoping study of current scour researches.
