Keywords: Computational fluid dynamics physical modelling coastal protection wave overtopping

Abstract: Coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to natural hazards intensified by climate change and extreme weather events. To address this, innovative solutions such as the two-tiered seawall system have been developed, combining a vertical seawall with a floodable promenade setback from an armoured seawall that enhances energy dissipation and reduces wave overtopping to the actual developed land areas to the rear. This research investigates the performance of such systems through a combination of physical modelling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). While CFD offers a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional physical modelling, its accuracy depends on calibration with benchmark physical data, which is currently lacking for two-tiered seawalls with wide promenades. To fill this gap, the study develops a combined modelling approach to generate benchmark datasets, validate CFD simulations, and establish a simulation workflow to optimise the design and evaluation of complex coastal defense systems.
