The Effect of Green Roofs on the Pressurisation of Stormwater Drainage Networks

Abstract: The growing urbanisation significantly influences the urban hydrological cycle by increasing the impervious surfaces, reducing the surface roughness, and increasing the stormwater runoff. Under these conditions sewer networks may be forced beyond their capacity, leading to pressurised flow condition, backflow phenomena, and stormwater geysering. A promising alternative strategy to mitigate the effect of the urbanisation involves the implementation of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDSs). This study investigates the effects of green roof installations on the mitigation of pressurised flow conditions in Stormwater Collection Networks (SCNs). Numerical simulations are conducted by using EPA SWMM 5.2. The SCN model is varied by changing the hydraulic roughness and the slope of the sewer conduits. Moreover, the effect of the green roofs is assessed by increasing their extension across the urban subcatchments. Preliminary results reveal that green roofs can significantly enhance the hydraulic behaviour of the urban drainage system.
