Keywords: Debris flow abrupt sediment supply sediment transport confluence theoretical model
Abstract: Debris flows are frequent in the tributaries and the resulting sediment supply strongly affect the sediment transport processes in the main river in the southeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China. To further understand the influence of tributary debris flows on the main river, a theoretical model consisting the processes that a debris flow moves through the gully and enters the main channel was established. Parlung Tsangpo basin was chosen to validate the model, and historical debris flow events occurred in Tianmo Gully were used to evaluate the sediment transport rate in the Parlung Tsangpo main river. The results revealed the most influencial factors on the river blockage due to abrupt sediment supply, and showed the significant variations in sediment transport processes of the main river.
