Abstract: This study improves overflow discharge estimation for side weirs and detention basins by addressing limitations in traditional formula like d’Aubuisson, which often fail under submerged flow conditions. A modified d’Aubuisson formula was newly developed whereby incorporating video surface velocity techniques and submerged flow condition. The enhanced formula accounted for flow direction and inward and outward discharge as well as overflow velocity pattern, which attempted to improve accuracy compared to traditional methods that usally overestimate discharge by focusing solely on overflow depth in side-weir cases. The new formula was validated in a controalled experimental side-weir dentention basion with bench-marked data using ADCP for the entire rising and falling period for a flood event. The findings highlight new formula’s reliability for precise flow estimation in complex hydraulic conditions particularly in side-weir detention basin and will be usable for evaluating amout of flood mitigation for a given detention basin.
