Abstract: Since the 1980s, the Dakar region (Senegal) has been experiencing recurrent floods, as a result of combined soil sealing, relatively flat topography, and important urbanization. Several neighbourhoods in Dakar, especially the ones of Pikine and Guediawaye, are frequently inundated after short episodes of heavy rainfall. The present work aims at using numerical codes such as SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) and TELEMAC-2D (EDF software for the simulation of two-dimensional flow) to model this type of event in two different neighbourhoods. Results not only highlight the ability of these methods to reproduce the main historical flood patterns, but also points out the limitations of the stormwater network to evacuate the overflow due to heavy rains by identifying flood risk areas. This methodology constitutes another attempt and a solid basis to consider scenarios to resize the stormwater management networks in this area. A specific attention is dedicated to the improvements of hydrodynamic and hydraulic models predictions through the dynamic integration of water exchanges during simulations, by comparison of coupled and indirectly coupled models.
