Keywords: Oyster shell reef Bragg resonance Reflection coefficient Natural-based solution
Abstract: This paper examines how a series of oyster shell reefs can use Bragg resonance to improve wave reflection, enhancing coastal protection by dissipating wave energy. Utilizing an experimental approach, the research investigates how different geometries of oyster shell reefs contribute to Bragg resonance phenomena. The study explores various configurations of oyster reefs and their interaction with incident waves under different environmental conditions. Key findings demonstrate that the sequence of oyster shell reefs can significantly enhance wave reflection by 200%, varied from 0.2 to 0.6, particularly when the distance between reefs is about twice the wavelength. The study investigates both porous and impermeable conditions, concluding that wave reflection in impermeable cases increases by up to 20%. The outcomes provide insights into the design and application of oyster reefs as nature-based solutions for coastal defense, emphasizing the need for tailored configurations to maximize wave attenuation benefits.
