Keywords: Channelized streams flood disturbance flow refugia fish community benthic invertebrate community
Abstract: Excessive external forces from flooding can cause community shrinkage, but fish and benthic invertebrates avoid flooding by using flow refugia. Channelized streams in Japan have been modified to increase the intensity of disturbance to the natural streams, and there is concern that narrow, deep, and monotonous river topography may result in a lack of flow refugia. This study aims to clarify the effects of channel setting in channelized streams on fish and benthic community dynamics due to flood disturbance. Assess flood disturbance through hydraulic calculations and colored gravel tracing and research fish and benthic invertebrates community dynamics to analyze the relationship between the both. Trends in community dynamics before and after flooding differed between fish and benthic invertebrates, showing higher biomass in some cases immediately after flooding than before flooding.
