Abstract: Hydropower plants (HPPs) can block or delay the passage of downstream migrating fish, leading to a reduction in the fish populations worldwide. Particularly, run-of-river type HPPs present a significant risk to downstream migration, leading to delays, injuries, and fatalities during turbine passage. This study experimentally investigates the flow fields and guidance efficiency of an innovative physical barrier, the fish-friendly Oppermann fine screen, to ensure a safe downstream migration. A bypass channel is located at the downstream end of the screen. The ethohydraulic experiments of Oppermann fine screen with clear bar spacing of 10 mm were performed for Chondrostoma colchicum. Accordingly, 24 individuals were tested, and the corresponding passage efficiencies were determined from the video recordings. Also, from the ADV measurements around the Oppermann fine screen, instantaneous velocity, acceleration, and vorticity fields were obtained for two different screen angles of α=30º and α=45º. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the optimal hydraulic design that allows safe downstream migration of fish species.
