Abstract: Sustainable food production is a major concern in densely populated areas. While in urban areas there is only very limited space for growing food, more compact and vertical agriculture has come into focus. In this study an integrated approach is demonstrated using solar energy together with pico-hydropower to power a vertical farm combining hydroponics for vegetable production with aquaculture. This combination supports overall higher yields with nutrient cycling. The systems-based design mimicking natural ecosystems promises low resource use and over time resilient and robust growing conditions for both vegetables and fish.
