Abstract: There is clear global momentum towards a clean hydrogen future, and many countries, such as Australia with abundance of renewable energy potential, appear well placed to play a key role. With a highly variable climate and water availability, Governments and utilities are increasingly turning their focus to how the potentially large but uncertain water requirements to support Australia’s hydrogen transition can be met efficiently and effectively without risking over or under investment resulting in adverse community impacts. While the financial cost of water supply may be a small proportion of hydrogen production costs, the broader economic, social and environmental impacts can be significant if not managed proactively. Arup and Frontier Economics provide a 5-step plan, using the Australian market as an example, to assist stakeholders identify where, when and how investment in water supplies can efficiently and effectively meet uncertain hydrogen demand and support the hydrogen transition.
