Simultaneous Flow Rate and Roughness Measurments in Hydraulic Turbines Using a Reformulation of the Pressure-Time Method

Abstract: This work presents a reformulation of the pressure-time method, which removes the need for complete closure of the guide vanes. Instead, initial, intermediate and final flow rate can be estimated during a simple load change. To improve the performance of the method, a methodology enabling the simultaneous estimation of the roughness between the measuring cross-sections with the different flow rates is proposed. The application of the proposed method to experimental measurements indicates its relevance and repeatability. The deviation from the electromagnetic reference flow meter is -0.5%.
