Evaluating Measurement Uncertainty in aDcp Discharge Using the Gum Method

Abstract: The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is an instrument widely used internationally to measure river discharge. By utilizing the Doppler effect of ultrasonic waves, the ADCP measures a river’s velocity profile and depth, calculating discharge from this data. Since no absolute value exists for river discharge measurements, expressing measurement accuracy through measurement uncertainty is essential. ISO has standardized the methods for river measurement and the processes for assessing measurement uncertainty using ADCP (ISO 24578,2020; ISO 25377,2020). The assessment method follows the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), developed by ISO and WMO. However, due to the complexity of the discharge calculation methods in ADCP, assessing measurement uncertainty through these processes is challenging. Moreover, calculating uncertainty using GUM requires analyzing various error sources, but no guidelines exist for analyzing these uncertainty sources. In this study, we developed software to calculate the measurement uncertainty of ADCP and conducted research on methods for analyzing ADCP uncertainty error sources.
