Coastal Floodplains Are Highly Vulnerable to a Rising Low Tide – the Drainage Window Conundrum

Keywords: Drainage window estuary low tide sea level rise climate adaptation

Abstract: Drainage of low-lying coastal floodplains depends not only on the capacity of local and regional drainage systems, but also on local tidal conditions. Under sea level rise, changes to the low tide will be particularly critical for low-lying floodplain drainage systems as both the drainage time and head will reduce (the drainage window). This study presents an assessment of the impact of sea level rise on the drainage window for coastal floodplains behind drainage infrastructure. Our analysis highlights a significant reduction in drainage capacity that is associated with estuarine geomorphology and the importance of considering these impacts in land-use or climate adaptation strategies.
