Abstract: The research presented aims to apply the rain-on-grid method for detecting flow directions during floods in an environment with specific lowland topography, including a network of streams and structures. The analysis is done for the watershed of a stream called Doplyw spod Oporowa, located in central Poland, Europe. The research is based on geoprocessing, hydrological modelling and 2D hydrodynamic simulations. The important element is rain-on-grid, which is incorporated into the hydrodynamic part. The investigation utilised publicly available data and direct measurements of local streams and structures. The HEC-HMS is applied to simulate rainfall-runoff transformation in distant locations. The HEC-RAS software is used in the investigation area. Several potential rainfall scenarios were analysed. The results show an unexpected water transition between watersheds of local streams. This is possible because the terrain is plain, and the channel capacity is relatively low. The determined flow directions and inundation areas are the basis of proper flood hazard management in the area of interest.
