Abstract: Drought is an environmental problem that presents complex interactions between natural processes (ecological and climatic) and social, economic, and political processes at a global level. These droughts, aggravated by climate change, have a growing impact on world societies, underscoring the importance of implementing national and international actions for proper management. Drought risk management is essential and is calculated by multiplying the threat of drought by the vulnerability of the affected area and its inhabitants. However, the main challenge lies in determining vulnerability since there is no single standardized method to define the indicators that make it and how they should be considered. Vulnerability assessment is usually based on the knowledge of local experts and area-specific conditions, resulting in a lack of consistent standards, thus making it difficult to compare different regions and apply uniform approaches. In response to this problem, this work proposes the creation of a drought vulnerability index using artificial intelligence. This index will enable an analysis of the critical components that comprise vulnerability and their influence on calculating drought risk. Implementing an updated index will make it easier to communicate drought risks to the population, decision-makers, and emergency planners. Having accurate and detailed information is crucial for the effective implementation of adaptation strategies and the efficient allocation of resources.
