Keywords: Barrier lake breaching dam breach flood emergency treatment

Abstract: The barrier lake, formed by large-scale landslides or mudslides blocking the river after earthquake, rainfall and snowmelt, etc. posing great threats to the downstream due to their vulnerability to breaching. Therefore barrier lakes have to be rapidly assessed and urgently treated in order to reduce the potential risk. However, barrier lakes are often formed in mountainous and canyon areas and the dam bodies often formed in a short period of time. Emergency treatment of barrier lakes is faced with difficulties like time constraints, lack of terrain data, unclear material composition and structure of dam bodies, inconvenient transportation of construction equipment, harsh construction environments, etc. Successful practices of manually disposing of high-risk barrier lakes are rare. In this paper, the technology used and the successful practice of emergency treatment of two high-risk barrier lakes, i. e. the Tangjiashan Barrier Lake and the Baige Barrier Lake will be presented, providing technical reference for emergency treatment of other similar barrier lake hazards.
