Abstract:

This article presents a physical model study of a spillway bay controlled by a segment gate, constructed at a geometric scale of 1:25. The tests aimed to measure the forces acting on the lower beam of the gate, produced by hydraulic jump waves formed at the downstream region. The study investigated three different spillway geometric configurations and analyzed the resulting forces on the beam under various hydraulic conditions, including partial gate openings, reservoir water levels, and tailwater levels. The maximum forces in upward and downward directions were determined for each test. Pressure coefficients, derived from the maximum forces, were used to define envelope curves so as to facilitate the estimation of hydrodynamic forces on the lower beam of the gate. These envelope curves can be applied in the structural design of segment gates, specifically to estimate the forces acting on the lower beam under hydraulic submergence conditions.
