Abstract: With the increasing demand for transportation and energy in China, river-crossing bridges and offshore wind turbine projects are developing rapidly. Guaranteeing the safety, stability and economic rationality of those projects is directly related to people's lives and property and national economic construction. Studies have shown that scour around the foundations, which decreases the embedment depth, is the contributing cause of the hydraulic damage of the hydraulic engineering structures. Consequently, accurate prediction of scour depth of deep-water foundation is a key issue in the construction of various hydraulic engineering projects. Traditional deterministic calculation methods usually pay more attentions from the view of hydraulic engineering, while the influence of sediments is ignored or considered by correction factors. However, since the scour conditions in actual projects differs with each other and get more and more complex along with the more challenging projects, the traditional methods can no longer meet the actual needs. For a given flow field condition, the scour resistance characteristics of bed materials also plays an important role in the scour initiation and particle transportation. Hereby, the apparatus developed by the authors for scour resistance test, together with its simplified testing method, have been introduced to analyze the microscale mechanism of particle erosion. By continuously applying and improving this method, scour around the foundations can be investigated from the view of geotechnical engineering. Meanwhile, scour countermeasures can also be evaluated by using this strategy, especially for methods using the concept of bed armoring.
