Abstract: In some fan-shaped rivers in Japan, the layers of sand and gravel consisting the riverbeds are so thin that the sand and gravel is washed away, and the underlying mudstone (poorly consolidated mudstone) is outcropped. When outcropping mudstone with low solidity undergoes erosion, a channel is formed. Erosion is accelerated by the movement of sand and gravel across the channel bed, and at the same time, the channel is immobilized, resulting in a self-regulating process of erosion. It is a necessary and important technology to improve the condition of the river channel and to return it to a sustainable channel that can continue to be managed. The Tama river has suffered from the bed instability of the outcropped mudstone by the flood.
