Abstract: The energy dissipator of hydraulic structures should be designed by considering some parameters such as unit discharges, head, and river bed material. Many type of stilling basins, e.q. USBR type, Vlugter type, Schoklitsch type and Indonesian’s standard, MDO type, MDS type and MDL type have already been applied to determine each dimension of stilling basin. Meanwhile, in some cases local scour still occurred in the downstream of its stilling basin. This paper discusses the influences of side walls and downstream protection works to minimize the local scour in the downstream of stilling basin. The study is based on the experimental results of three dimensional model test on weirs and spillways in hydraulic laboratory of Research Center for Water Resources in Bandung. It was recommended that the transition between vertical walls and sloping downstream wing walls of horizontal basin should be located in the basin, upstream of the end sill, while in the bucket type the transition should be located at the end sill. Moreover, the downstream protection work for stilling basin can be chosen as rip-rap, gabion, or concrete blocks. The most effective downstream protection measure is U-shape rip-rap which provided at downstream of end sill and at the toe of wing walls.
