Abstract: Water scarcity is an important issue in Yogyakarta as scarcity is an impending crisis due to the rapid development and increase in ground water usage. It is predicted that Yogyakarta city will face water crisis by 2025. This study is to propose a method to recharge water artificially to stem the depletion of ground water and the recession of the water table. The aims of this study is to pump river water at the upstream side to the ground through artesian wheel at the river side continuously. Beforehand, the water quality is tested to confirm that the quality is good in order to avoid contamination of groundwater. Soil investigation will be conducted to select the best location to construct the artesian well. The path of the recharged water will be traced using stable isotopes. The isotopic signature of stable isotopes in the recharged water will be measured and samples of water will be taken and also measured thus verifying the path of the recharged water. There is high possibility that the recharged water will flow to the river as quick subsurface flow or will be trapped at the depression storage while travelling from upstream to downstream. Thus, this study will confirm the quantity of recharged water that can reach downstream side to fill the groundwater in Yogyakarta.
