Abstract: Protective devices are frequently used to secure hydraulic systems and maintain their reliability during transient conditions. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize their appropriate design, considering both their protective performance and associated costs, as they have a direct impact on the total cost. This paper aims to develop a framework for selecting and sizing these protective devices to ensure reliable system performance under hydraulic transient conditions while minimizing costs. A real-life transmission system located in Brazil was simulated and analyzed. The results indicate the effectiveness of the NSGA-III algorithm in seeking optimal solutions. The air chamber and one-way tank solutions were compared.
