Abstract: We analyze the changes of land use and the associated CO2 emissions in Fukuoka, Japan by utilizing the geographic information system, i. e., GIS. Based on the results of land-use changes, CO2 emissions are categorized into the direct and indirect emissions and calculated separately for the respective ones. The analytical results indicate that urbanization from agricultural and coastal areas are found to be most pronounced in the study region. Though the transformation to clean energy has been promoted in recent years, which has reduced CO2 emissions in urban areas, our analytical results show quantitatively that CO2 emissions have still significantly increased in traffic hubs and commercial centers in the urban areas such as Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City.
