Abstract: Cross currents acting on inland navigation units can cause significant lateral drift or rotation. Such currents lead to increased travel time and power required to keep the aimed course. This paper reviews various design guidelines for inland waterways necessary to study the stability of barges moving in cross-flow dominant regions. In addition, empirical models that predict vessel stability in terms of additional maneuvering width and allowable lateral velocity are discussed.
