Analysis of the Trend in the Significant Wave Height Over the Northern Indian Ocean

Abstract: Statistical descriptions of the extreme met-ocean conditions are essential for the safe and reliable design and operation of structures in the marine environment. The significant wave height is one of the most important wave parameters for coastal and offshore structural design. The met-ocean parameters are mainly affected by climate change at both global and local scales. Design parameters, such as the design of significant wave height with a prescribed return period, are directly influenced by the existence of trends in the significant wave height. Therefore, this paper aims to detect and quantify the trends in significant wave height over the selected domain of the Northern Indian Ocean (i.e., Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal). From the findings of the study, it is observed that an increasing trend in significant wave height over most of the grid points is considered in this study. Further, the trend values for most of the grids are statistically significant at a 95% confidence level.
