Abstract: This paper analyzes the free surface level variation in the surge tank and in the secondary shafts of a complex hydro electrical scheme with two headraces and four secondary intakes. An analysis of the transient operating regimes of the hydropower plant must take in account the complex flow in the surge tank and in all the secondary catchments. Important operation restrictions and different transport capacities of the headraces must be considered. The study is completed with the mathematical model of the phenomenon and with the numerical simulation of the regimes. It is pointed out which are the operating regimes and the maneuvers that can cause malfunctions or undesirable incidents.
