Abstract:

Alluvial fans, widespread in arid and semi-arid regions, link mountain catchments to downstream basins and have long supported human settlements thanks to their fertile soils and groundwater potential. Yet, these landforms are highly vulnerable to flooding, events that are sudden, sedimentladen, and destructive. Advances in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) now allow detailed, nearreal-time mapping of floods on these complex terrains.
