Abstract: Hydropower is the most important domestic source of renewable energy in Switzerland. Its dispatchable character plays an important role in the country’s ongoing energy transition. Switzerland’s goal is the increase of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) to compensate for the planned phase-out of nuclear and achieve a fully decarbonized electricity system by 2050. Since most of RES are described by intense fluctuations and strong dependency on weather conditions, the parallel use of a more flexible and autonomous sources of energy, like hydropower, need to be increased and must serve as an important pillar during the transition. In this way, RES like wind and solar can be integrated into the electricity market easier and more efficiently, thus helping to meet the goals of the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050.
