Abstract: The influence from natural convection on internal flow in a freezing sessile water droplet on a cold surface is in focus. By the implementation of an enthalpy-porosity solidification model and a temperature-dependent water density, a new OpenFOAM solver is developed to simulate the freezing process of water. The results capture the directional change of the internal flow reported by experiments, although the numerical velocities are lower than the measured ones. The findings highlight the role of natural convection for the directional shift of the internal flow and justify further investigations of the effects of additional mechanisms in the freezing process.
