Abstract: This study presents the procedures used to implement a homologous start-up sequence for a reduced-scale Francis turbine on the Heki closed-loop test stand at Universite Laval. The objective is to replicate the start-up conditions of a 140 MW prototype turbine to investigate fluid-structure interactions at the model scale. Start-up key parameters such as the guide vanes opening and rotating inertia were determined through dimensional analysis and validated by one-dimensional SIMSEN simulations before experimental implementation. The homologous start-up was successfully implemented on the closed-loop system, and the resulting performance parameters were compared with the available prototype measurements to validate the methodology.
