Abstract: Decentralised stormwater treatment and retention systems are becoming increasingly important for urban climate adaptation, especially as digitalisation advances in the water sector. Rising efficiency demands and an increasing number of operational sites creates growing maintenance needs, particularly for decentralised filters, which require regular monitoring. Over time, rain events cause accumulation of pollutant loads and reduce filter permeability. Inadequate monitoring of such technical stormwater systems and filters may pose serious operational and environmental risks. Systems without bypasses could clog and become critical infrastructure hazards with increased risks of flooding and untreated flows, while even systems with bypasses may lead to untreated runoff entering water bodies more often because of reduction in filter permeability. These solutions enable operators to respond more effectively to challenges posed by climate change, urbanisation, and resource scarcity while ensuring resilience, reducing operational costs, and supporting the sustainable urban water infrastructure.
