Flow Resistance Characteristics and Flow Structure of Open Channels Due to Differences in Vegetation Arrangement and Density

Abstract: Vegetation within river channels plays a significant role in enhancing environmental functions, such as improving water quality and sediment purification capacity and creating habitats for organisms. It also contributes greatly to river development that fosters high water accessibility by creating inviting waterside spaces. However, during floods, vegetation increases flow resistance, presenting a drawback. Therefore, establishing appropriate vegetation management techniques for each river and waterway is essential. This study experimentally investigates the effects of various configurations and differences in vegetation density on flow resistance characteristics and momentum transport characteristics in vegetation communities undergoing elastic deformation. As a result, we clarified the flow characteristics, secondary flow distribution characteristics, and momentum transport characteristics under each vegetation growth condition.
