Environmental and Hydraulic Effects of Pilot Riverbank Protection Works on the Manu River: A Decadal Post-Project Evaluation

Abstract: Riverbank erosion and the resulting degradation of the riverine environment and ecosystem constitute major challenges for water and land management. In this study, we introduce a novel concept for a riverbank protection structure with the potential to improve riverbank management in Bangladesh. A pilot implementation was carried out along the Manu River in Moulvibazar District in 2016, and its effects on both erosion control and environmental restoration were examined. The pilot facilities have functioned successfully, stabilizing the riverbank, creating a nature-friendly waterfront, and improving water access for residents. Based on field investigations conducted ten years after construction, this study reports changes in river morphology, the structural integrity of the embankment protection, and the status of vegetation recovery. Recommendations for riverbank management in Bangladesh are also presented.
