Wake Turbulence at Low Submergence: Integral Length Scales and Links to Fish Body Size

Abstract: 4D-PTV quantified energy-containing eddies in the wake of a cubic obstacle at two relative submergences via the integral length scale L. Expressing eddy size as χ = L/Lf connects these hydraulic scales to fish body length and habitat relevance. Linking wake turbulence to fish -scale interactions, this study provides a quantitative ecohydraulic scaling and demonstrates that increased submergence produces larger energy-containing eddies, suggesting greater biomechanical suitability for larger-bodied fish.
