Abstract: Bhutan's rivers represent one of the most intact fluvial systems in the Himalayan region, supporting diverse and partially endemic aquatic biota. Simultaneously, the country's extensive hydropower potential forms the backbone of national economic development. Balancing hydropower expansion with ecological integrity requires a consistent methodology for determining environmental flows (E-flows). The national guideline for E-flow regulation provides this framework (NECS et al., 2018). This abstract synthesizes the methodological pillars of the guideline. Additional socioeconomic and cultural considerations as part of the guideline are not elaborated in this summary.
