Smoltcamera: Development of a Non-Invasive, Ai-Assisted Camera Technology for Monitoring Migration Lake-Run Brown Trout Smolts

Abstract: Lake-run brown trout smolt (Salmo trutta (f. lacustris)) are critically endangered in Switzerland and classified as a national priority species. Protecting smolts during their downstream migration is essential for maintaining stable populations. However, knowledge about the time of migration and size distribution of lake-run brown trout smolts in Alpine streams and the influence of abiotic factors remains limited, complicating the implementation of effective downstream fish passage solutions at hydropower facilities. To bridge this knowledge gap, we are in the process of developing and testing the smolt camera, a non -invasive, AI-assisted flow-through camera system , called the Smoltcamera.
