Abstract: Studying the ice-bearing capacity of sea ice is necessary for infrastructure development around ice roads, runways, tourist camps and offshore structures. This paper describes the results of experiments conducted on sea ice formed on the surface of a pool filled with seawater. The pool was set up inside a tent on the shore of the Ice fjord in Spitsbergen. The ice was subjected to constant and ramp loads. The ice deflection and ice surface accelerations were measured in several points depending on time. To record the acoustic radiation of ice during tests, an acoustic transducer was installed on the ice surface. The air, ice and water temperatures were measured by the temperature string as a function of time. Ice samples taken from the experimental site were used to measure the viscoelastic properties of ice. The flexural deformation of floating ice under concentrated load, measured during tests, was modelled using Comsol Multiphysics finite element analysis software.
