Abstract: A type of saline columnar model ice is developed in the Small Ice Model Basin in China Ship Scientific Research Center (CSSRC SIMB) and used for research in fundamental areas related to sea ice, such as ice modeling, ice mechanical property testing, and study on ice-structure interaction. To deepen the understanding of the microscopic crystal structure of this model ice and further investigate how the microstructure influences its physical and mechanical properties, thereby enhancing the high-fidelity simulation of polar sea ice environments, systematic experiments have been carried out to observe the crystal structure with the model ice. An innovative image recognition technique has been developed to capture and analyze the crystal structure images and further estimate the internal micro-characteristic parameters including bubbles and grain sizes in detail at different cross-sections. The investigation would facilitate the optimization of ice-making art and improvement of the model ice performance, as well, provide reference object to numerical simulation of the model ice.
