A New R&D Paradigm for Polar Marine Equipment Driven by Digital and Intelligent Technologies

Abstract: This article addresses several pressing issues in the development of China’s polar marine equipment, including slow progress of localization and industrialization of core equipment, and absence of a fully developed experimental verification and forecasting system. To meet practical demands of improving equipment fault tolerance, reducing cost of field testing, and accelerating generation of operational capabilities, the article proposes a new research and development paradigm. This paradigm focuses on overcoming key technical challenges shaped by the distinctive characteristics of polar environments, while aligning with China’s strategic needs and the developmental features of emerging technologies. Through a systematic comparison of development trajectories and technical characteristics of foreign polar marine equipment and China’s domestic aviation equipment, the article summarizes relevant experiences and lessons in testing methodologies, design philosophies, and industrial deployment. It further explores the opportunities enabled by advanced technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence, thereby demonstrating both the necessity and feasibility of adopting a differentiated and advancing development pathway for China’s polar marine equipment. The paper also investigates the construction of an “AI + Trinity” collaborative testing and forecasting capability system that integrates laboratory experiments, in-situ tests, and digital twins. By integrating fundamental research, technological development, and engineering application, this system is intended to support the development of polar marine equipment, accelerate technological iteration, and enhance the generation of equipment capabilities. This paper also aims to elaborate on this new development paradigm, promoting the transformation of China’s polar marine equipment development from imitation-based following to independent innovation, and from breakthroughs in individual components to the construction of systemic capabilities.
