Abstract: During a flood on a creek or a small river, a bridge opening may run completely full or even the entire bridge may be submerged by the flow. The paper deals with a calculation of flow through a partially- or entirely submerged bridge deck of a rectangular shape. Laboratory experiments are presented and used for a formulation of the equations for the backwater and specific discharge associated with the partially- and entirely submerged rectangular bridge deck. The results are compared with formulas from the literature.
