Abstract: A large scale model hydraulic study of inhank and overbank river flow, using a regular sinuous river channel with a mobile bed, was carried out in the UK Flood Channel Facility at Hydraulics Research, Wallingford. The sediment chosen for this investigation had a wide range of particle sizes present, covering the fine sand to coarse sand range. Measurements were made of three-dimensional velocity distributions and bed profiles at cross-sections around the meander. These measurements were used to determine the structure of the flows around the meander and the interaction between main channel and floodplain flows. These flow structures were related to changes in the bed profiles and to bed material sorting.
