Abstract: This paper describes the 3-D numerical modelling of flow over a shallow trench. The numerical scheme uses a finite difference scheme based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations using four turbulence closure models. It is important that the three dimensional circulation should be correctly represented by numerical schemes especially when these are used to solve problems involving such things as sediment transport or pollution dispersion. This paper examines the various trade-offs between simplifying assumptions and differing turbulence closure options used in the numerical model.
