Abstract: The paper addresses the possible role of mathematical models in the prediction of large-scale coastal behaviour (LSCB). Various large-scale model concepts are considered, and the research needed for their further development is identified. The overall conclusion is, that mathematical models offer good perspectives to the quantitative prediction of large-scale coastal dynamics, especially if they are supported by laboratory and field measurements.
