Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the characteristics of the flow immediately upstream of a vertical sluice gate located perpendicularly across the full width of a rectangular channel. The geometrical properties of the surface eddy, the pressure defect on the bed and the velocity field in the converging or jet forming region have been studied and analyzed. Some interesting and useful results and correlations have been obtained.
