Abstract: The behaviour of isolated blocks of fluid propagating at the surface of a turbulent stream is predicted, applying the concepts of entrainment and the open parcel representation of invironmental mixing. The predictions are linked to the dispersion of a uniform density field released at the surface of a stream flow and apply to the phase of lateral spread following development of density surges at the field edges.
